  •   Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate:

Indications

When bowel motility is adequate, it is useful in patient with constipation due to hard, dry stools, especially in chronically ill and geriatric patients; in painful anorectal disorders to minimize discomfort; in cardiac and other conditions to avoid straining at stool and where peristaltic stimulants are not indicated.

Dosage

Usual oral daily dosage

Adults: 100-200mg

Children:   Up to 3 years: 10-40 mg

3 to 6 years: 20-60 mg

6 to 12 years 40-120 mg

The dosage needed for optimal response varies in individual patients. Best results may be obtained with a divided dosage - two or three times daily. The effect on stools is usually apparent one to three days after the first dose. Administer syrup in one half glass of milk or fruit juice, or in infant formula, to mask bitter taste.

Side effects:

No adverse side effects have been reported.

Precautions

Should not be administered concomitantly with mineral oil as increased absorption of the oil may result.
