Pharmacist Body Suggested IMA not to Interfere in Functioning of Pharmacy Council of India

Largest pharmacist association of India namely Indian Pharmacist Association (IPA) suggested Indian Medical Association (IMA) not to interfere in the functioning of Statutory Pharma body i.e. Pharmacy Council of India. Recently IMA in its press release opined that Pharm D graduates can not prefix Dr. with their name.
“Pharmacy is an independent scientific profession. Pharmacy education and profession in India is controlled by the Pharmacy Council of India, a statutory body, governed by the provisions of Pharmacy Act, 1948 passed by the parliament. It would be unethical for any Non Statutory body to discourage a Statutory body i.e. Pharmacy Council of India”, said Bhupendra Kumar, General Secretary, Indian Pharmacist Association.
Kumar further added, “Doctor of Pharmacy ( Pharm D) is a professional Doctorate in Pharmacy approved by Pharmacy Council of India, All India Council of Technical Education and University Grants Commission”.
As per code of Medical Ethic Regulations, 2002 a physician should recognize and promote the practice of different paramedical services such as pharmacy and nursing as profession and should seek their co-operation wherever required. IPA is of the opinion that it is necessary to maintain a respectful attitude toward each other’s profession of Indian Health System.
